Free space optical communications is the future of high bandwidth communications systems. Free Space Optical Communications (also called Laser communications) will enable space missions to retuen 10 to 100 times more data with only 1% of the antenna area of current state-of-the-art communications systems, while utilizing less mass and power. Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Optical Communications Group (OCG) is NASA's premiere optical research facility.
