The charity is designed to assist in the provision of legal representation for those awaiting capital trial and punishment in the US, and to raise awareness of potential abuses of their rights. This is done in a number of ways. Amicus trains UK lawyers and students to go and work in the US alongside attorneys. The Charity researches particular areas of law, and also drafts amicus curiae briefs to be presented to US courts. We have also made applications to the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights in Washington about breaches of the American Declaration of Human Rights in death penalty trials. Amicus can also provide trained trial observers to report on individual cases.
